On Veterans Day 2024, the Borrego Springs community gathered at Christmas Circle for a heartfelt ceremony honoring veterans and active-duty military members. This event, a collaboration between American Legion Post 853 and the Borrego Ministers Association, underscored the importance of unity in celebrating the service and sacrifices of those who have defended our nation.
Pastor Mateo of the Borrego Springs Community United Methodist Church, representing the Borrego Ministers Association, opened and closed the ceremony with a thoughtful invocation and benediction. His eloquent words encouraged reflection and gratitude, creating a reverent atmosphere for all in attendance.
Dale Jones, Commander of Post 853 and Director of the Borrego Ministers Association, played a central role in organizing the event, alongside other dedicated members of the post and community. Their combined efforts ensured the ceremony was both meaningful and seamlessly coordinated, reflecting the deep respect Borrego Springs holds for its veterans.
The keynote speaker, Jimmy Smith, USAF Vietnam veteran, inspired attendees with reflections on service and sacrifice, while also recognizing hometown hero Gary Saunders, USA Vietnam veteran. The program featured a traditional rifle salute, the playing of Taps, and patriotic music performed by Judy Taylor. Marjorie’s distribution of poppies provided a timeless reminder of remembrance and respect.
This Veterans Day was a true testament to the collaborative spirit of Borrego Springs. With the efforts of American Legion Post 853, the Borrego Ministers Association, and committed community members, the event served as a moving tribute to veterans, highlighting their sacrifices while bringing the community together in unity and gratitude.
